Biography – Richard Tratt S.W.L.A, S.B.A.
Richard began painting in his teens. He then attended Northwich College of Art, Cheshire, and Dartington College of Arts, Devon (1970-1974).
His work has been shown at many London galleries including the Royal Academy and ROI. He displays annually at the Mall Gallery Exhibitions.
Richard works mainly with oils on canvas and has been painting full time since 1979. He was elected a member of The Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) in 1981, and The Society of Botanical Artists (SBA) in 1986.
He now lives in the New Forest, Hampshire.
Richard’s most recent work marks a change in direction for him. After 50 years of learning, he is using his knowledge, from a lifetime of figurative painting, in his new and distinctive Abstract Landscapes. This imaginative and dynamic style combines palette knife, brushwork and glazing to give a unique strength to each work.
“ I use the vibrant qualities of light and atmosphere to bring to life the magic within the landscape. The freedom of abstraction enables me to evoke an interplay between realism and pure artistic invention. In the process of working, I am able to embrace the pure enjoyment of shape and colour”.
International Exhibitions
He regularly exhibits at the annual SWLA and SBA exhibitions. Richard has attracted attention internationally including painting two giant murals in The Royal Palace of Oman in 1995. His paintings are collectable in Japan, with one man exhibitions in Tokyo, in 1998 and 2000.
