Exhibited in 1988 at the Mall Galleries in an exhibition to honour Terence Cuneo’s 80th Birthday.

It is fresh to the market and previously held only by the authors family since it was painted for the book.

Novel synopsis:

The war has welded the young crew of Lancaster UM7 into an efficient airbourne fighting team. They are selected to drop essential equipment to the French Resistance on their next bombing mission.

Fate takes a hand and the aircraft is damaged during the raid. They manage to reach the drop area, but have to crash land.

The supplies have arrived, but so have the aircraft and crew.

No one could doubt the courage of the young flyers, but there is a great difference between fighting in familiar surroundings at 20,000 feet for which they were trained and the static immediacy of staring death in the face while standing on the the ground far behind enemy lines. The resistance give them shelter and, as it becomes apparent that there is no way back, the British air crew have to come to terms with their predicament.

The Germans know a major sabotage attempt is about to be made by the resistance and that a British aircraft is down. Stopping one and finding the other quickly take top priority and normal overland escape becomes impossible for Peter and his crew. There is only one crazy chance to get out – repair UM7 and fly home. But time and the odds are heavily against them.

Helene, the leader of the resistance, is young, attractive and totally ruthless. When the aircrew express concern about her ageing parents and ask what would happen if the Germans caught them, she replies calmly, “Oh, I would kill them both. Then they could not talk.”

COMING HOME is a story of determination, courage, love, conflict and camaraderie. All the ingredients of an exciting first novel.

Terence Cuneo was a portrait and figure painter. He also painted ceremonial, military, railway and engineering subjects. Cuneo was born on the 1st November 1907 the son of Cyrus Cuneo. Cuneo studies art at Chelsea and the Slade schools of art in London. Cuneo was also a member of the War Artists Advisory Committee.
