Biography

William Lionel Wyllie RA also known as W.L.Wyllie was born in London in 1851 and he lived in Portsmouth in the Round Tower on the entrance to Portsmouth harbour for many years.

He was one of the best known marine artists of his period painting all manner of craft and marine scenes.

W.L.Wyllie Artwork

His paintings, drawings and etchings captured the Battle of Trafalgar, Battle of Jutland, Pool of London, Yachting and commercial harbour scenes in Great Britain and abroad.

He was particularly noted for his finely detailed copper plate W.L.Wyllie etchings with subjects including the Thames, White Star ships, Royal Yacht Squadron Cowes, British ports, Jutland, Gosport and Sea scouts in Portsmouth harbour to name a few.

W.L.Wyllie Books

Over the years he illustrated many Wyllie books on the Thames, Jutland, painting techniques, WW1 and Portsmouth.

Battle of Trafalgar:

The William Lionel Wyllie Battle of Trafalgar oil painting is available to view in The National Museum Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Membership of Academies:

Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water-colours 1882, New English Art Club 1887, Associate Royal Academy 1889, Associate of Royal Society of Painter-Etchers 1903, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers 1904 and Royal Academy 1907.

On artwork the W.L.Wyllie signature is normally clearly visible on his etchings, watercolours and oil paintings.

His work can also be viewed at the Tate Gallery and The National Maritime Museum in London.
