Biography – Arthur Briscoe
Arthur Briscoe was a painter in oil and watercolour and etcher of marine subjects. He was born in Birkenhead on 25th February 1873. Educated at Shrewsbury School. He studied art at the Slade under Fred Brown and at Julian’s in Paris and then spent his time sailing.
Sailing Books
He painted and wrote on yachting subjects including Handbook on Sailing under the nom de plume of Clove Hitch. Most of Briscoe’s etchings show sailing ships and his vigorous compositions present an invaluable historical record of the workings of the last great commercial vessels.
