Biography – Frederick Golden Short

Frederick Golden Short (F.G.Short) was a New Forest landscape painter in watercolour and oils. Golden Short lived in Lyndhurst and exhibited from 1882-1908. He was often seen riding his bicycle around the New Forest with his Windsor and Newton painting box.

He had holidays to paint in Cornwall including Newlyn stopping and painting in Devon on the way. On these trips he painted busy harbours, beaches and the rocky coastlines. Further afield he visited Scotland, Holland and Germany.

His studio was behind his father’s chemist shop in Lyndhurst high street. His family was talented and they put on evenings when his brother played the piano, his father had a lantern show and Golden Short displayed his paintings.

He also painted many of the New Forest’s pub signs.

Exhibited paintings often had elaborate gilt frames as opposed to his local paintings which often had stained oak sometimes with a small gold slip.

His subjects include Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Lymington, Keyhaven, Boldre, Beaulieu, Burley, Boldrewood, Minstead and Cornwall.
